Regional Security
Pugwash provides a platform for building understanding, correcting misperceptions, and identifying shared interests that help reduce the risk of regional conflict escalation.
Our activities across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East encourage fresh thinking on security architectures and arrangements through sustained dialogue across divides. Pugwash also informs policymakers and the public about escalation pathways and nuclear risks in near-term policy choices. Project work in the programme area includes confidential track-two workshops, consultations, and conferences to reduce tensions and support constructive approaches to regional security, conflict resolution, and the challenges of nuclear and WMD proliferation.
Current Projects
Project on Rethinking European Security
There is a critical need to rethink approaches to European security and plan carefully for what future arrangements and policy frameworks are put in place. This project focuses on the long-term security architecture needed for Russia and European states to co-exist without mutual suspicion and fear.
Project on Nordic Security
The Arctic and Baltic sub-regions are now largely unformed strategic spaces and the Nordic region serves as a focal area where military and political interests of NATO and Russia intersect. While this creates new risks of escalation, it also offers opportunities to co-develop security arrangements and practices which mitigate risks.
Project on Middle East Non-proliferation and Security Dialogue
Pugwash seeks to foster a constructive environment for addressing regional nuclear and WMD proliferation concerns which reduces the risks of regional conflict escalation. Through Track Two dialogue we strengthen mutual understanding and sustained communication across divides between key actors in and outside the region.
