Eliezer Rabinovici (a member of the Israel Pugwash group), Christopher Llewellyn Smith, Zehra Sayers, Herwig Schopper and Khaled Toukan were instrumental in founding and developing the Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME) laboratory in Allan, Jordan. The institution promotes scientific cooperation in the Middle East region, with participating members from Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Pakistan, the Palestinian Authority and Turkey.
