The Pugwash Leadership is pleased to announce two new staff members to the Secretariat team. Chiara Fargnoli joins as the new Pugwash Programme Coordinator to support the planning and implementation of activities across the four Pugwash programme areas. Joël Christoph has become the first Pugwash-Carnegie Fellow for European Security, helping to deliver the new Pugwash project ‘Rethinking European Security’.
Welcoming the news, Pugwash Programme Director Poul Christiansen said “I’m so thrilled we can bring in Chiara and Joël to support our work! Both will add energy, ideas and increase our ability to deliver on the range of activities. Joël has already been very actively involved in our project on Rethinking European Security and I’m delighted he can remain involved to drive forward the plans we have. Chiara will work closely with me and the Leadership to develop Pugwash’s organizational capacity and deliver on our strategic goals. As an ISYP graduate myself, I’m so pleased we can continue to integrate the brilliant pool of younger talent into Pugwash.”
Chiara Fargnoli is the Programme Coordinator of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs. She holds a Master’s degree from the Fletcher School at Tufts University, with a specialization in conflict resolution and technology policy, and completed her mediation training through the Harvard Mediation Programme. She is one of the founding members of the Italian Student Young Pugwash, currently serving as its Secretary. Chiara is also a PhD candidate in Communication Studies at the Catholic University of Portugal.
Joël Naoki Christoph is the Pugwash-Carnegie Fellow for European Security. He is a French-Japanese economist working on arms control and risk reduction. He is a Research Associate on the Graduate Programme on Existential Risks to Humanity at FernUniversität in Hagen. In 2024, Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs appointed him a Youth Communicator for a World without Nuclear Weapons. In 2026, he received the Gorbachev/Shultz Youth Award from Voices for a World Free of Nuclear Weapons. He has served on the leadership team of International Student/Young Pugwash since 2023 and has written on incentive-compatible mechanisms for the next review cycle in the Pugwash-Carnegie brief on the NPT at a crossroads. He studied at University College London, Tsinghua University, and the European University Institute.
