Nuclear Weapons
The hallmark of Pugwash continues to be working toward the reduction and elimination of the risk posed by nuclear weapons.
In practice, this translates to fostering dialogue on risk reduction, arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament that will promote and enhance cooperative security. This programme area explores concepts and paradigms of the multipolar security environment in order to develop mutually acceptable measures that would avoid escalation and crisis.
Through track two workshops and publications, Pugwash identifies a range of strategic, political and military arrangements to reduce pressures toward arms racing and promote restraint. We develop substantial policy recommendations in support of the principle that arms control is an integral component of national security. Pugwash also supports practical dialogue and policy development to sustain confidence in the NPT review process and support practical implementation of nonproliferation commitments and Article VI obligations.
