Scientists, ex-diplomats and professors of international relations from seven Latin American countries met virtually to launch the Pugwash Latin American Group, based on the principles and objectives of Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs. Members of National Pugwash Groups that already exist in Argentina and Brazil may also participate in the wider continental group.
Fabiana Santellán, from Uruguay, an engineer specialist in information security, and Dr. Odilon Marcuzzo do Canto, from Brazil, nuclear engineer and former Rector of the Federal University of Santa Maria, RS, were elected as President and Secretary General of Pugwash Latin America, respectively.
Pugwash Latin America will stimulate debate on the role of science and the academia in society, on the maintenance of regional and international peace and security as well as on disarmament and arms control, elimination of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, climate change, human rights, well-being and social development, among other subjects.
