The National Pugwash Groups of Argentina and Brazil declare their deep concern over the military intervention of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Ukraine, which is causing the death of civilians, indiscriminate destruction and the displacement of millions of people, violating international agreements such as the Charter of the United Nations and generating the greatest political instability at a global level since the end of the Second World War in 1945. This situation is particularly alarming given the existence and threat of the use of nuclear weapons.
In the current circumstances, the Russell-Einstein Manifesto, signed by 11 prominent scientists in 1955, becomes fully valid again due to the concern about the use of nuclear weapons in armed conflicts and their devastating consequences on all humanity:
“In view of the fact that in any future world war nuclear weapons will certainly be employed, and that such weapons threaten the continued existence of mankind, we urge the governments of the world to realize, and to acknowledge publicly, that their purpose cannot be furthered by a world war, and we urge them, consequently, to find peaceful means for the settlement of all matters of dispute between them. We appeal as human beings to human beings: Remember your humanity, and forget the rest.”

About the Pugwash conferences in Argentina and Brazil:
We are nonpartisan and independent groups, inspired by the Russell-Einstein Manifesto, which gave rise to the Pugwash Conferences for Science and World Affairs, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995, which appeals, with a strong humanist spirit, to a rational dialogue to resolve conflicts and the social responsibility of scientists. Participants act according to their personal abilities and not on behalf of any other group. Our goal is to promote a rational debate on scientific-technological, security and human development, economic and social issues with a
regional emphasis, in order to democratize knowledge, strengthen democracy and contribute to decision-making based on scientific evidence.
