17th Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Summit

From 19-22 September 2019 the Pugwash President, Ambassador Sergio Duarte, represented Pugwash at the 17th Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Summit held in Merida, Mexico. The Summit was officially opened on 19 September by the Governor of the State of Yucatán and the Foreign Minister of México presided over a ceremony later that day.

There are 30 Laureates present in Merida. On the 18 September Amb. Duarte spoke at the inauguration of a square named after the late Mexican Laureate Alfonso Garcia Robles. Amb. Duarte also participated in two panels: one on “priorities for nuclear disarmament” and another on “Sustainable Development Goals”. Other working sessions focused on Social Development, Economic Development, Equality and Empowerment, Indigenous Issues,  as well as a “Climate Strike“. There will be interactive sessions with the participation of youth.

A Final Declaration will be issued at the close on the 22nd.
